Background

There is a history of activities within the IST-panel that studies/have studied different aspects of mobile tactical networks, e.g. IST-124, IST-161, IST-142, IST-146, IST-172, IST-174, IST-175, IST-187, IST-189. There is also an ongoing activity that studies management of these networks IST-180. All of these activities have focused one or more parts of a large network puzzle. The puzzle is becoming more and more complex and we expect this trend to accelerate in the future. Thus there is a need for an activity that study new innovative solutions for smart management and control of complex heterogeneous mobile tactical networks with an emphasis on combining 5G networks with traditional military networking technologies.

Objectives

The main objective of this activity is to develop a novel network architecture with methods and protocols that can adapt, manage and control existing radio technologies in a heterogeneous military networks for increased robustness and optimized planning and use of the available network resources. (Developing new radio technologies is not in scope for this activity). The mobile tactical network should be able to optimize resources and adapt to different situations that arise during or between missions, including handling wireless networks with extremely low data rate. It should also be able to react to different situations that will put sever constraints on the network, for instance like high mobility, difficult terrain including urban operations, or electronic warfare attacks, and have protocols that can be engaged for more robust behaviour in these situations. Tools and underlying mechanisms should be developed, that allow for advanced operational network planning. An example of this can be to plan differentiated treatment of dissimilar information from different sources in the network, or to plan for the use of only wireless networks with LPD characteristics in specific situations. The planning should also be able to decide how traffic should be prioritized as the mobile tactical network is challenged and does not have capacity to support all demands. The mobile tactical network should be able to leverage new state of the art wireless network types (both military and civilian) where the traffic for example can be steered with very directive beams or have other characteristics that current tactical network management and control protocols cannot easily support. As elevated platforms (both single and swarms) are being introduced to improve tactical networks, the management functionality of the network should also take into account the best use of these. Current state of the art tactical networks are not able to get the full benefit of such platforms.

Topics

• Study how different network types can be combined to form a well-connected network of networks. (How to combine 5G networks with traditionally military radio networks is one example of this problem) • The management functionality needs to handle complex optimization problems, artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches for solving the network adaptation and optimization problem should be explored. • Integration of novel software-defined radio systems and smart antennas into the heterogeneous mobile tactical network. The mechanisms and protocols must be able to adapt to the high flexibility that these radio-systems can provide • New routing techniques that can provide connectivity in a heterogeneous network, also in challenging network conditions and that can find routes with specific criteria such as a connection that have LPD characteristics • Network architecture that take advantage of the Information Centric Networking (ICN) paradigm that considers information rather than network nodes as the key parameter when establishing a connection in the heterogeneous tactical network.
